Disputing Credit Report Errors
Steps to correct mistakes on your credit report
Step-by-Step Instructions
Get Your Credit Reports
You're entitled to one free report per year from each bureau (Equifax, Experian, TransUnion) at AnnualCreditReport.com.
Review for Errors
Common errors: accounts that aren't yours, incorrect payment status, wrong balances, duplicate accounts, outdated information, or incorrect personal information.
Gather Supporting Documents
Collect evidence proving the error: payment records, account statements, police reports (for identity theft), or correspondence with creditor.
File Dispute with Credit Bureau
Dispute online, by mail, or by phone with each bureau showing the error. Be specific about what's wrong and include copies of supporting documents.
Dispute with Creditor
Also contact the creditor reporting the incorrect information. Send written dispute with evidence. They must investigate.
Wait for Investigation
Bureaus have 30 days to investigate. They'll contact the creditor to verify information. You'll receive results in writing.
Follow Up
If error is corrected, get written confirmation. If dispute is denied, you can add a statement to your report explaining your side.
💡Pro Tips
- •Dispute in writing (certified mail) for paper trail
- •Dispute with all three bureaus - they don't share information
- •Check your reports regularly to catch errors early
